The funny thing about presenting and public speaking is that the majority of people will tell you they don’t enjoy it and/or aren’t very good at it. And yet regardless of who they are and what they do, most of the speaking they do on a day-to-day basis IS public speaking.

You see, mostly when we talk to ourselves we keep it as an internal dialogue that nobody else can hear. But whenever we open our mouths and actually make a noise in front of another person we’re speaking in public – hence “public speaking”. So why do so many people find it so scary?

I think it’s the eyes. All those sets of eyes fixed on you….. BORING into you. It’s unsettling. So would it be any easier if your audience was ignoring you and all looking the other way? What if they all dozed off so it WAS as if you were talking to yourself? (Have you ever been a Rotary after-dinner speaker?)

Whatever the reason, the fact is that before getting up to speak, even the most seasoned professional will have some butterflies, whether they choose to call the feeling nervousness or excitement doesn’t really matter. Rest assured, we all experience it to some degree.

If I had one tip to pass on, if I was asked to tell you the most important lesson I’ve learnt over the years I’ve been presenting, it would have to be to stress the absolute necessity of being totally prepared.

Now this may sound obvious and I’m sure you’ve heard this before, possibly many times, and like a lot of important messages it tends to become diluted the more we hear it “Oh yes, I knew that, now what else?”.

And yet, knowing this, some people will be outside in the car park seconds before they have to deliver their sales pitch scribbling it out on the back of a business card. I know, I’ve been there.

When I talk about being prepared, I mean you should know your talk off by heart. You should be able to give it verbatim, standing on your head, without even having to think about what comes next.

Now some of you may be thinking “Yes, but I don’t work like that. I like to keep the spontaneity” or “Yes, but I want to tailor my talk to the occasion” or “Yes, but that would be boring because I’d just be on auto pilot.”

But actually, that’s not what happens. In effect, the opposite is true. When you know your talk by rote, it gives you the freedom to change it around, to add, to subtract without losing your direction. It’s like driving from A to B. If your route is set from the outset and you know it well, you can safely veer off and browse in a few antique shops and have a pub lunch in a picturesque village off the beaten track and still get back to where you were to complete your journey. But, if you’d just set off in the general direction with no main route to which to return, you’d soon get lost if you were to be diverted and you’d have difficulty picking up that thread again.

You see, there are so many things out there that can throw the speaker, and lots of unexpected things can occur when you’re dealing with the public. No matter how good you are, you will become distracted, so knowing your material to the nth degree is absolutely crucial.

If something happens that needs your attention, you’ll have to stop and deal with it, but you can return to your talk with barely a glitch and appear calm, collected and hence the ultimate professional.

You see we all get nervous. We all stick our feet in our mouths sometimes. We don’t ever operate in a hermetically sealed environment, especially when exposed to other humans. But prepare, prepare and over-prepare and not only will you enjoy the confidence of knowing that nothing can phase you because you know your material, but if you’re forced off your chosen route for any reason you can return smoothly and appear to be the consummate professional speaker.

And after all, if you can’t – or won’t – speak about your business, who will?

Almost everyone has that sense of fear with public speaking and what better way to address it than to know several tips to overcome the fear of public speaking.

It is not a surprise to know that the fear of public speaking is a common problem that hounds a lot of people all over the world and many are not aware about how they may easily get through with such fears and lay it all to rest.

Here are some common tips that one can apply and to help overcome the fear of public speaking.

If you come prepared to speak before a group, make it a point to always come prepared.

Some good points in ensuring that you are prepared is to establish the topics you will be discussing what particular points you want to drive to your audience and ideas you want to sell to the listeners.

Coming prepared to a talk or a speech helps boost self –confidence and establishes your mastery of the things you want to discuss and share.

Make it a point to practice at least twice or thrice before going through the process of delivering your speech.

Not only do you get to master your discussion, but this also lessens the burden of committing mistakes.

Another positive note to practice is that during the practice sessions, you get to iron out kinks that may occur along the way or make some necessary modifications or revisions to what you hope to work on.

Prepare a mental outline of the things you want to discuss or say, this will arm you with the idea and the things you want to say and reduce your fear of speaking before your audience.

Try to reduce your fears through positive mental attitude.

You should always consider that nobody is perfect and this is one of the most important facts that would arm us in overcoming your fear of the stage or speaking before a crowd or a group of people.

Keeping and sustaining a positive mental attitude will help you through the negative energy that causes you to be anxious or fearful of the situation that you are in.

Relax and do not dwell on unrealistic fears, especially those you may think can happen, but also has the tendency of not happening.

Frankly, no one can control what can or may happen in the next hour, or day or month, however, disregarding that fear of the uncertainty can indeed help a lot in diminishing, or better yet, totally eliminating the fear that you may have of public speaking.

Even when you are not about to speak publicly or are just going through your daily routine, try to keep in mind to practice every once in a while.

It may be with an officemate, a group discussion, a conference or convention, a staff meeting, always grab the opportunity to try and make yourself be heard or interact with those around you.

This is one good way of conditioning yourself in the art of communicating and public speaking, which will pave the way for how you can master the art of conversation and communication.

Although there are varying degrees as to how effective these methods are, but truth be told, these common tips are very effective tips to overcome the fear of public speaking.

Throughout the history of human civilization, people have been expressing their confidence and strength, not only by force, but also by the noble art of public speaking.

The orators of ancient Greece were highly respected and valued in the community. Likewise, today’s world leaders are admired and esteemed when they have the power to address the public with poise and conviction.

Such a high regard for public speaking makes the average person cringe at the idea of talking in front of an audience no matter how big or small the size.

Whether giving a toast at a wedding or delivering a speech to a large assembly, most people make a big deal about public speaking and try to avoid it as much as possible. But public speaking should not cause such a big fuss. Challenging as it may be, public speaking can be done with a few simple guidelines.

Before Making The Speech: Preparation

Like any other endeavor, public speaking requires careful preparation to be successful. Many people would dream of having those “inspired” spontaneous speeches seen in movies; however, such scenes rarely happen in real life.

To have at least a decent speech, one should plan well. Even the world’s most famous leaders prepare for public addresses, and most even have teams to work on those plans.

Well, even if one does not have a speech preparation committee one can prepare for public speaking. First, one should know for what the occasion the speech is for. The Gettysburg address would definitely not be appropriate for a wedding; thus, a speech has to fit the event where it will be delivered to.

Second, one should examine the audience who will witness the speech. An assembly of academics would not take a perky speaker seriously; one should choose a suitable public speaking style based on the audience.

Third, one should ponder what is being expected in the speech. A farmer’s association would usually not be interested on a speech about the intricacies of beadwork; one should carefully study the subject matter to be tackled in public speaking.

Making The Speech: Writing

Again, dazzling spontaneous speeches rarely happen in real life. Most good speeches have been written before their delivery. While most noted public figures have speech-writing committees, one can make a good speech even without the help of a team of ghostwriters.

When writing for public speaking, one should carefully organize the contents of the speech. It usually pays well to begin with a very strong introduction. It is important to catch the audience’s attention early to prevent them from being bored easily. Next, the body should be purposeful.

The contents of the speech should relate well and support each other. It is not good to digress too much; though at times some deviations help attract attention when boredom arises. Lastly, one should make a conclusion that sticks to the mind. No matter how stirring a speech is, it is useless if the people forget it the instant they leave the gathering. Conclusions should give a concise but memorable recap of the body.

The Actual Public Speaking: Delivery

A written speech would not be consummated without the actual public speaking itself. This is the part most people are afraid of; but when proper planning and writing is done well, the delivery should follow easily.

One must decide whether to speak from memory or to use notes. Beginners should benefit from a script or a guide, when one becomes more comfortable speaking in public, one can start relying from memory.

Reading directly from a script can be quite boring for the audience; thus, it is important to keep constant contact with them. Speaking from memory is quite impressive, but it can be difficult to avoid missing some parts of the speech. Speaking with notes can be a good compromise so long as one is able to expound on the points well. The choice of how to deliver the speech depends entirely on the speaker; thus, it is important for one to weigh the options carefully.

Learning More About Public Speaking

Several resources could help one do well in public speaking. Several books and articles about the topic have been published and they can well be accessed through the library or the bookstore.

Many companies offer public speaking training, and such services provide in-depth courses that could help one speak well in public. There are also several articles and courses available through the Internet, some of them are even posted for free.

The pen is mightier than the sword, says an adage. But most people do not know that when written words become spoken words, they explode like firecrackers! If books speak volumes, speeches fire up entire lives.

There are three kinds of words: the written, the meditated, and the spoken.

Written words inform and give full spectrum of probabilities about a topic or event. Meditated words have the potential to bring out explosive ideas. But when both the written and meditated words are verbalized, the result is tremendous, to say the least. Spoken words are fired from the barrel of a gun (the mouth), through a triggering mechanism (our tongue). When used effectively, words are like bullets that hit targets accurately and leave an indelible mark.

Speaking is a very unique technique of conveying messages. It involves body and soul. It can create a visual drama with live emotions and gestures that put life into the message like no written or meditated messages can achieve. In speaking, you really become the message rather than the words you speak. Thus, entire multitudes can go berserk in public with a moving speech.

It pays to learn how to speak with fire or have a flowery tongue. The power of the spoken word is insurmountable. Entire nations have been either united or divided by one dominant leader who spoke winningly of a cause. Abe Lincoln spoke and persuaded divided Americans to unite, and this was before modern sound systems and media were used.

Vladimir Lenin, on the other hand, spoke with fire to sway Russian peasants and workers to bolt away from Czar Rule, and even called on the Proletariat or working class of other nations to a similar action.

You can also wield this powerful tool of speaking very credibly to an individual or crowd by just learning and practicing the chief points of public speaking.

Presentation. Hardly ever accomplish a pair of words strike so much concern inside cardiovascular, mind, along with can range f of the people who’s inspired to stand up along with communicate in public. Be it making a display, simple presenting and public speaking nervousness, or perhaps being forced to appear groups of individuals a persons vision when expressing that which you must point out, this can seem to be arduous, terrifying, and complicated.

But beating the worry regarding presenting and public speaking is a lot easier as compared to you think that. Particularly if you see that you currently have what can be done to become a great interesting, considerate, smart, and also assured loudspeaker.

The first step in defeating this worry will be correct planning. If you’re trying to fluked it, you might be over-filling your head to start with, specifically if you are generally nervous regarding public speaking.

Hint # 1 * Place in enough time to lessen your nervousness

Only you know simply how much you need to get ready. Individuals vary — which arrives obviously about persona users — within how much they have to prepare so that you can feel at ease. So there isn’t any rule besides be honest with ourselves, in case you will want principle, think Three:One. A few moments of planning for each and every about a minute associated with chatting. Your efficiency is truly the frosting for the meal, the cake-making takes place strategies progress!

Nearly all people that My spouse and i run into underprepare given it needs time as well as. My personal response is this: do the preparing very well any time you are going to do a totally distinct chat, after that hone and also produce that talk to be able to take action pretty much ‘off the actual cuff’. My partner and i know this as having a series of ‘signature talks’. Once you’ve this kind of you’ll feel a lot less anxious in general plus your prep occasion is greatly lowered.

Hint no 2 * Envision it running nicely

Did you know mental performance are not able to distinguish between actual events and also dreamed versions? This is why it functions therefore forcefully. You can near up your eyes, sit back again along with think about your current speak running nicely, and the mind may keep it a new Recollection. So if you want to get the muscle memory space associated with accomplishment, it can be done by thinking a pursuit nearly as nicely as you can simply by doing it. My partner considers, wishes for, reads concerning, watches videos concerning playing golf daily….and since he started carrying out which he’s got better around the program without the more training as well as training.

Visualization will likely assistance with worry. As you are visualizing yourself communicating, make sure you are soothing at the same time, which means you begin to relate a single with all the other. Then under time limits your body has experienced exercise with relaxing when it recognizes the actual government of an audience.

Suggestion zero 3 – Minimize stress answers in your body

It is your entire body that’ll be displaying warning signs of anxiety as well as tension, so it is your body you will want to unwind before speaking, not just your mind.

Whenever you are preparing to communicate for you to do the singing loosen up to protect your current speech, and enable that you undertaking evidently and also fully. This can be much more crucial should you be stressed, plus a good singing warm up will help relax your system normally.

Great breathing in is the key in order to sensation (as well as appearing) comfortable when talking. Take in air low in the diaphragm location (just under the curve of your respective cheese along with previously mentioned your current tummy) — because you inhale, your diaphragm techniques away and lower, after that as you breathe out, that techniques way up as well as in, to be able to discharge mid-air. This kind of breathing in supports the voice and in addition delivers alerts on the human brain that every will be effectively. While we are under assault, we have been more likely to take a breath tummy, which you may recognize may happen driving under the influence stressed. Each time such things happen, only provide your breathing down again yet again.

It is rather calming to be able to take a breath in this way, not least as you have to focus challenging to get it proper when you find yourself not really employed to that, which takes the mind off negative feelings!

Now relax, find it running smoothly, and simply go for it!

Public speaking is not an experience that every one enjoys, however in our life there are many such occasions when we are forced to go up to the stage and speak to hundreds or even thousands of people. When a person is speaking in public he should carry himself with a lot of confidence in order to be able to speak in front of the masses. The only problem that a person has at the time of speaking in public is that he fears that his speech or conversation might not be acceptable by the masses, creating fear it starts making you nervous on the stage. Public speaking anxiety can be common for a person facing a huge crowd. You could go through similar anxiety if it was the first time on stage, or if a person is nervous and doesn’t have the confidence to speak to a large crowd. The reason for such unrealistic assumptions can be for any reason, may be he/she thinks public may laugh at his speech or may not agree. All these thoughts make him think that the people might not like him when he is announcing, thus a fear of public speaking is aroused in a persons mind.

To over come the fear of public speaking firstly you will have to stop assuming that you are not accepted to speak, once done with this you will automatically gain yourself some confidence. A very basic thing has to be kept in mind during the public speech see to it that the information that you are trying to give are all true, secondly don’t try and appose the people directly this will enrage them. Also when you are about to present a speech try putting it in the form of important points this will make your speech interesting. You will fell better after your speech and will come out confidently knowing that you were given attention of many people.

Another way to get over your fear of public speaking is that you can visit a psychiatrist who deals with such problems. Hypnosis is used to mold your mind in a way where you will have no fear of public speaking anxiety. Hypnosis is used for various reasons to divert a persons mind in the right direction. It has been a way that many people have opted for because of its overall accomplishment. However a hypnosis appointment will be a very expensive experience if you happen to assign a psychiatrist. Costs can be reduced by getting cheap, but effective downloads from the Internet. There are many sites providing such services. When you are done with this you will find that you are more confident and that there is none of the source that seems to create fear. Your hypnosis cd can help you prepare for any public speaking event. Fear of public speaking can no more be a major issue for you. Knowing this you will show your presentation confidently and explain it with a lot of assurance. You are bound to get positive response for this. Getting over the fear of public speaking should no more be an area of concern for you.

The Art Of Public Speaking – Overcome The Fear

One of the touchstones to success is powerful public speaking. If you have the ability to speak in front of a great crowd of people, then many people already consider you as someone who is on his way to the top. Skills in public speaking could undeniably bring anyone to the heights of his career and the pinnacle of his glory.

But, how about those who are afraid of public speaking? What is in store for them if success is held by those who only knows how to speak in front of people?

One of the worst phobic problems that could hit a person, who is aiming for glory, is the fear of public speaking. People who have this problem get so anxious when they are asked to speak in front of a crowd that there are really times when they are paralyzed by their fear. They get numb and cold at the same time, others even get anxiety attacks.

There is one way that could treat fear of public speaking and that is hypnosis. However, there are many therapists now who also have other programs that deal with this problem. Aside from hypnosis, there is also what they call as the Neuro-Linguistic Programming and the Emotional Freedom Technique that are also sure-fire ways to treat anyone’s fear of talking to a great number of people. Those who are suffering from the fear of public speaking should seek professional help, especially if their successful treatment means an advancement in their careers.

If you have a fear of public speaking, you could also take on simple steps to help yourself, aside from getting professional treatment. One of these steps is understanding that your nervousness will not actually show to your audience. It is just your brain, which is working overtime, that is telling you that you are going to do poorly.

Get rid of this inner voice and you will be fine. When you are doing some public speaking, don’t forget to breathe and pause at regular intervals. This seemingly routine exercise will help you remain calm and speak in a normal and even pace. You do this quite easily when you are engaged in a simple conversation, so there is no reason why you can’t do this in front of a crowd.

Never memorize your piece word for word. Instead, get the gist of your topic, then have some notes and pointers on the parts that you are more familiar with. This way, you can always have your notes to fall back on when you are in doubt as to what to say next. Always make sure that you are talking about a thing that you are familiar with because this will give you more leverage when it comes to knowing more about the subject than the people you are talking to.

Lastly, always think of positive thoughts during those days that lead to your public speaking date. Remember that anything negative will always lead to negative outcomes, so stay away from bad thoughts and focus on the good. Change that dread into anticipation and you are already on your way to making a success out of your speech.

To ensure triumphant communication within a group, it is essential to enhance your communication skills. Speaking in front of an audience can be fun only if you are well prepared. Here are some techniques that can help you improve your public speaking skills.

• Make eye contact. It signifies your interest and desire to be honest and credible.

• Posture and gesture are also effective ways to communicate your message.

• Dress Appropriately. How you look is also important. Your appearance should convey a message for dignity and respect.

• Be conscious of other people’s space.

• Keep your message understandable and straightforward. Remember, “Less is more.” Clarity is important because it affects all areas of your message. Avoid using jargons. Use words that your audience can understand.

Why “Less is more”? First and obvious, is to avoid information overload. Speaking involves great concentration. If you provide too much information, chances are your audience will not listen to you anymore.
Second, clarity and pausing allows your audience to understand and acknowledge what you are saying.

• Be prepared. Remember the 6 W’s:
Who? – Determining your audience’s age, gender and interest are among the ways you can classify them.

What? – What topic would you like to discuss? Usually, when you get an invitation to speak in public, follow their theme and purpose.

How? – How can you communicate your message? Language and non-verbal cues are important. Proper choice of words helps your audiences understand you better.

When? – Obtain a logical timing of your discussion. Learn how to pause when necessary.

Where? – If you have time, visit the area where you will conduct your speech. Determine the best seating arrangement according to the type of your audience. You also need to consider the temperature, space and lighting conditions of the area. Visiting the area also helps you determine where to place your visual aid.

Why? – Convey the advantage and purpose the will gain if they will listen to you. Preparing a list objectives can help you narrow down the key points you need to emphasize.

• Do not overwhelm your audience with numbers and statistics. You can put this information in handouts for easy reference in the future.

• Use visual aids to support your message.

• Establish dialogue and rapport. Allow your audience to participate in the discussion. You can also create rapport by call your audience by their names.
